Green Spot Orange

History

Green Spot soft drink was first created in Claremont, California in 1934. The Orangeade flavor is made from concentrates of Southern California citrus fruit. In the 1930s the company produced many advertising signs which are nowadays sought out by collectors.

In the 1950s the brand expanded into Asia, with franchised bottlers in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. Businessman Chin Sophonpanich built the Bangkok bottling plant which opened in April 1954. The drink has since become the a popular orange soda in Thailand. In 1958 the Thai Green Spot Co. Ltd. introduced the bottled soy milk drink Vitamilk which has also become a popular seller.

In the United States, bottled Green Spot disappeared from shelves some time in the 1960s, but the company is still running in Claremont, producing citrus fruit syrups used in flavoring drinks, ice cream, and other products.

Review

A non-carbonated orange drink made with 10% juice and a bit of orange pulp. I think I'd rather it had some carbonation to give it a little more zip, but the taste is decent enough.

The label describes it as a "California Orange" flavor, which perhaps evokes a carefree Sunkist image of surfing, sunshine and orange groves. Local fruits and freshly-squeezed juices are so easily available in Thailand I'm not sure why thirsty consumers would choose this drink bottled from fruit so far away, and without carbonation to differentiate it from other juices, except that it comes in a cute bottle and is easy to drink on the go.
