History Rubicon was founded in the UK by Naresh Nagrecha and Vishram Vekaria in 1981. Seeing a niche market for exotic fruit-flavored sodas, the food scientist entrepreneurs created the "Passionade" flavor in Vekaria's kitchen and began manufacturing it in 1982. The drinks sold well and the company gradually expanded to ten different flavors such as guanabana and pomegranate sparkling sodas. In 2008 the founders sold the company to A.G. Barr, maker of Irn-Bru for £60 million. Review A cool and thick fruit soda. Its made with real fruit, though the first sip seems much like any mango-flavored sweetened drink. Only after the drink slides across the tongue does the rich real fruit flavor become apparent. It may not be the sweetest mango flavor but it's satisfying and refreshing. It's more filling and satisfying than a typical fruit-flavored soda pop, and crisper and more uplifiting than a non-carbonated fruit juice. I can't decide whether its fair to contrast this with a fruit juice, or only fruit-flavored sodas. It's definitely more flavorful than a soda, but is it more refreshing than a juice? Does the carbonation improve it over plain mango juice? It does have a 7-Up like sugar flavor that makes it not as clean tasting as a juice. Its got a sour-sweet first sip flavor that's a bit candy-like.
